RE: Gas below 3 bucks

gasbuddy.com is reporting in Illinois, prices ranging from $2.81 in Peoria to $3.85 in the Chicago suburbs. Earlier they were showing $2.57 just west of Chicago but that numbers gone so I'm guessing that was a bogus number. While I love to see the price of oil drop it's only because of poor economic conditions, not because oil is finally "cheaper." While it seems contrary, this is really a bad thing.

RE: Winterizing

When winterizing I just ignore the manual and follow my own system. It's a very simple and effective system. In December I hook up the fiver and take it to Florida, in late March or early April I bring it back home. No problem! Try it, you'll like it.

RE: Don’t buy State Farm RV insurance

I too have been with State Farm since I insured my first car (much too many years back). I've had claims on my house, motorcycle, car, truck, motorhome, and lately my fiver. I have always been treated fairly and respectfully. Only one time was I upset with an adjuster. I had a car with racing stripes. A drunk hit my rear pushing me into a car in front of me (I was not in the car, it was parked). At the claims office the adjuster wouldn't pay for the stripes, he said the body man would be able to "peel them back, repair the fender, then put them back." I won't tell you what the body man had to say about that. In any case it worked out. I've gotten quotes from other companies (including on my RV's) and no one has ever been able to do better. I checked with a "RV" company but they wouldn't cover my Goldwing, said to go to someone else for that. I did. I kept everything right where it was, with State Farm. My agent is a NUMERO UNO guy! In case you missed the point, I think State Farm is a great company to do business with!

RE: Extended Warranties

I have never bought any kind of an "extended warranty." Whether for an RV, vehicle, or washing machine. I have always covered my own expenses. At this point in my life if my engine blew up in the truck, after shelling out the money I would still be way ahead in the game. The winners with these policies, contracts or whatever you want to call them is always the insurance company (or whatever they call themselves). But that's what works for me, we all have our silly little quirks that we like to blow our money on and it's just that this is not one of them for me. If it works for you, go for it.

RE: Extended Warranties

Bob Shaw: Pilgrim only warranties the trailer for one year so you'll have to decide what that is worth. Also check the policies very, very carefully. Some (if not most) will only cover the unit AFTER the original warranty runs out--even on orphaned units like yours (and mine). I've had my Open Road for a year plus now and love it, with or without Pilgrim still in business. The important thing is to make sure the policy, whether from your dealer, Good Sam, Camping World, etc., covers from the time you lay your money down, not starting when the original expires.

RE: Spell Checker

TXiceman: Are you saying that when I am typing in the "Quick Reply" text box that it is Firefox that is doing the spell checking? I'm a Firefox fan and hadn't realized that FF was the one checking my spelling.

RE: Spell Checker

I don't know about iespell but it seems that whatever spell checker is used as I enter this stuff works pretty good. As an "old" typing teacher I notice bad spelling and want to put red marks on your typing. I try hard to make sure my typing is correct--both spelling and grammar but I know I screw up some times. As the old teacher I wish more people would take pride in what they "publish" but most just say "so what, you know what I meant." Have to admit that some I just give up reading, it's so bad, both spelling and grammar, that I just can't follow it.

RE: No awning on slide???

Toppers are another of those personal options. I had them on my TT and am in the process of installing them on my fiver. (I install them myself.) I have never had an awning flap in the wind so I don't know about this criticism from anti's but in either case I think it boils down to just personal opinion. If you don't want to spend the money you create reasons why not to justify your beliefs. If you don't mind spending the money you create reasons why to justify your beliefs. Look at the "reasons" here for and against and make up your mind as to whats important to you. I like the idea of keeping the water and junk off but that's my opinion and it works for me.

RE: low water pressure! guess what it was!!!

I have a similar problem that's existed since I bought it (new)last year. My problem is quantity of water, not necessarily pressure. Everything has been checked and is fine but still low volume. I ask some of you plumbers this question. I have done a lot of plumbing work, both with copper and PVC. When I put on an adapter, T, elbow etc. the accessory went OVER the pipe. If I was using 1/2" pipe I had 1/2" all through the system--accessories and all. In this trailer I have 1/2" PEX, the various fittings for PEX go INTO the pipe, therefore, the ID is smaller. I believe if I have 100' feet of 1/2" pipe hooked to 1 foot of 1/4" pipe I'm going to get volume based on the 1/4" not the 1/2". This trailer must have a thousand T's in it (I suppose I stretched that some)could this reduce my volume substantially at the distant shower? Does this qustion make sense to you plumbers out there?

RE: Probably Dumb ? - Pin Weight...

I'm not sure but as I glanced through here I thought he asked for oranges and everyone answered with apples. He said something about his "trucks pin weight" not the actual trailer pin weight. Now a truck doesn't have a pin weight but I would interpret his question to be "what pin weight can my truck handle?" Now I believe that's his cargo carrying capacity. It simply amounts to how much he can carry in the cargo section of this truck. Once he knows that then he can be concerned about the actual pin weights of the trailers he wants. The CCC should be in his manual or possibly on the tag on the truck somewhere. His trailer towing ability also is different than the CCC. He must be aware of his CCC and his towing ability.

RE: Probably a stupid quesiton, But how to level??

I used boards for years then I bought two sets of the Lynx levelers. Now the Lynx stay in the storage compartment while I use my boards. Somehow boards just seem to work better (for me) but of course they are not as convenient to carry as the levelers. Also watch your slides, it took me a while to catch this one. My curb side slide must be heavier than the the street side. I would get the trailer level, unhook, open the slides and wa-la, I'm unlevel. Hmmm. I finally got it. Got my trailer level with slides out, then set the bubbles on my eagle levels. Duh.

RE: Ford F-250 V10

I also have the 2008 F-350, extended cab, dually with a 4:30 rear end. Bought the truck in April of 2007. I tow a 40' fiver weighing about 15,000-15,300 pounds loaded for travel. I love my truck. Lately I've been running about 55 mph towing. I used to run 60 but can see a difference in mileage and I'm never in that big of a hurry to get anywhere. I can get towing (all things equal--no hills, no wind, etc.) in the mid- to low-8's. Been as good as 9.5 but had a very, very stiff tailwind. Empty is the rub. I think some people are dreaming with their mileage. 10 or so around town, about 13 on the highway. But--I repeat--BUT this truck is not designed to "run around town." It is not designed with the soccer mom in mind. It is designed to work (tow in our case). And it does it, very, very well. If your buying for towing--go for it--you won't regret it. If you want "around town" buy a Smart car or maybe a Ranger if you want a "truck."

Check the Ford truck site, it has all of the towing specs you want. Trailer Life also posts this information only I've found that it isn't always reliable. https://www.fleet.ford.com/showroom/rv_trailer_towing/2008/2008_default.asp

RE: Ike prompted shutdowns of 14 Texas refineries

Sorry LAdams but people much smarter than you or I have substantiated that number. All one has to do is be a little versed in econ 101 and they can quickly understand how that number can be. I won't try to explain it to you because I'm sure it would only fall on deaf ears. We tend to believe only what we want to believe, the truth be damned. All I can say is if I thought a company was cheating me then I would not buy from them! Duh. That doesn't take rocket science to figure that out. I see people all the time buying gas from the most expensive place in town and then complaining about the price of gas. Here's your sign!

RE: whats the price for weighing

I go to the local grain elevator. I've even typed up a sheet and had the operator write the various weights on it; eg: truck alone, trailer alone (yes I unhitched--but just raised the fiver up so all weight off of truck, recorded, then back down), sides, etc. Done this at two different elevators over the years and they are always very friendly and helpful. When offered to pay they always say with a smile "No charge." I wouldn't go when grain trucks are lined up but our local elevator told me--when I asked when was a good slow time--that there wasn't really any, trucks come all hours, all times of the year.

RE: Wonder why warranties are so short??

My 2004 Gulfstream TT had a 2 year warranty. I can't speak for all "Lifetime Warranties" but my daughter-in-law had a Hyundai with a 100,000 warranty. In order to keep that warranty in effect she had to do all of the maintenance listed in the manual at the specified times. Some of the things were verrrrry expensive and she let it expire at about 60,000 miles. I don't recall all that was involved but there were a lot of things that had to be replaced like timing belts, etc. (even if not broken) that really added up. I was always impressed with these "Lifetime Warranties" until I saw what she had to do and decided maybe they weren't so hot after all. That's only speaking of one experienced I had with long warranties, don't know everyone else's rules.

RE: ceiling fan

Those with 12v fans--a couple of questions. Are these fans "house size"? That is do they come in 52"? Also what's the noise level compared to a 120v house fan? Most 12v fans I'm familiar with are noisier than 120v.

RE: Chinese Trailer Tires

My Carlisle tires were made in China, it was stated on the tires. As far as I know all Carlisles are now made in China. Those were the 2 year old tires with which I had 3 blow outs on a trip to Florida. The tires had correct PSI and the trailer was about 1,500# underweight. I now have Michelin XPS's and they were made in England.

RE: I cleaned my roof with uv protectant!

Bigdog I agree with you on the cover. Don't get me wrong, I think a cover would be wonderful. Any time my unit could be out of the weather would be a good thing--which is why I'm a "slides in" man when not being used. A friend told me he was considering buying a cover for his MH and asked what I thought. I told him to be very realistic as to its use. Putting on and taking off a cover has to require a little effort. If, after a trip, he was considering leaving/moving the MH in a couple of weeks, would he cover it for a few weeks? Probably not. I bought covers for my tires but if a couple of weeks are all that separates trips they probably won't go on. Oh yea, the friend decided to save his money because he didn't want to be tripping over a MH cover in his garage all the time.

RE: Ike prompted shutdowns of 14 Texas refineries

Would someone please explain to me what price gouging is? I read in the paper where people are complaining that they bought gas for some amount and the station was gouging because it was so much cheaper down the street. Well duh? Why not go down the street? I've seen cars waiting to get gas at a Shell when across the street at TA it was $0.10 cheaper. Stupid! Why should TA keep their price down when Shell is getting all the customers they need? As far as hurricanes having less of an effect years ago that was because the supply/demand numbers were much further apart. Today we use everything refineries can produce and then some. Any little disruption has one h*** of a ripple effect. I hear things like oil companies should be patriotic and operate at a loss, etc. Bull! Ask those who live on their investments after retirement what they think of that. The oil industries return on assets is in line with other industries. Everyone screams about the billions made but it amounted to about 9% return for Exxon. That same year Bank of America had a 21% return! Why aren't you screaming about them! The big price jump now is not coming from big oil but local stations and wholesalers. I'm planning on starting a trip on Wednesday and hate to see what's going to happen to my gas budget. But that's life. I don't play the blame game as others, I understand how economic markets work and it's obvious that there are a lot of people in forums like this who have no clue.
